Specialist in metal carving, intaglio in London’s Leather Lane, Japanese engraving in Tokyo by Kenji Io.
Castro Smith is a hand engraver from the North East of England. He trained in engraving at RH Wilkins and specialises in intaglio engraving focusing on the iconography of jewellery.
While completing his traditional apprenticeship Castro was given the Podolsky award, Theo Fennell award and accepted an Apprentice of the Year award at St James’ Palace.
After completing training he travelled to Japan for one year with a Winston Churchill Trust fellowship, training with Japanese masters in chasing and engraving techniques with the support of Hiroshi Suzuki and Kenji Io.
Returning from Japan, Castro opened his own workshop at Sarabande: The Alexander McQueen Foundation in London launching his jewellery range that combined both European and Eastern techniques and styles at Dover Street Markets, London, Tokyo and New York.
